Obstetric consultants

Not all women will need to meet a consultant but if you have a medical condition or develop a complication during your pregnancy, the consultant obstetrician is the person who will take overall responsibility for your care, or play a role in planning your care in collaboration with the midwife.

The consultant will have trained in the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and specialises in the care of women with more complex pregnancies. A consultant is fully accredited by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) to undertake such work and also has a role in teaching and training the junior doctors. Consultants have a team of doctors working under them, and you may see a members of the team on some occasions. The doctors providing obstetric care in antenatal clinic will be an experienced doctor.
