Reading Research – An introduction to critical appraisal

The Library runs training sessions looking at how to read research using critical appraisal techniques. There is a general introduction and two advanced sessions, one focusing on quantitative research and the other on qualitative research.

The introductory session will look at:

  • Why you need to critically appraise research
  • How to start your appraisal
  • General questions to ask when you appraise a paper

The quantitative session will include:

  • Questions to ask to critically appraise quantitative articles
  • General features of quantitative research
  • Different types of quantitative research
  • Types of statistics commonly used in medical studies

The qualitative session will include:

  • Questions to ask to critically appraise qualitative articles
  • General features of qualitative research
  • Different methods of qualitative research
  • Things to look for in qualitative research

All sessions include a practical section in which participants will be able to practice appraising a paper.

Advanced booking is required as you will be required to read the paper which will be appraised during the session in advance.
