Kingston Hospital is a welcoming and dog-friendly hospital that greatly values the interactions between visiting Pets as Therapy (PAT) dogs with patients, their family and friends, and with staff.
Pets as Therapy is a national charity founded in 1983. The aim is to enhance health and wellbeing in the community through the visits of trusted volunteers with their behaviourally assessed animals.
It’s well-known (and scientifically prove) that interaction with a gentle, friendly pet has significant benefits in relation to both physical and mental health and a visit by PAT dogs of all sizes brings a smile to many faces. Volunteers and their PAT accredited dogs can visit almost all parts of the hospital including wards and clinics as well as staff areas. Visits may occur either with the direct involvement of staff or simply by introducing yourself and your dog to individuals.
Accreditation:
PAT dog Volunteers need to first have their dogs assessed and accredited by Pets as Therapy before applying to the Hospital to visit as a Volunteer (see https://petsastherapy.org/join-us/join-pat-dog/ for more details). Dogs will need to be at least nine months old and the owners must have had them for at least six months. A modest annual fee is paid to the charity which amongst other things provides insurance cover for PAT visiting purposes. Pets as Therapy also sell “livery” for both the dog and owner.

Our refurbished Main Outpatients Department is one of the busiest in the area. Our volunteers located in the Main Outpatients entrance are the first point of contact for patients and visitors when they arrive at the hospital. They are a friendly, welcoming face and have a good knowledge of the hospital and the services offered. They help patients and visitors to navigate the different sections of MOPD, and improve visitor experience to the hospital.
Navigating can involve simple sign-posting to ensure that patients and visitors can get to wherever they need to go. More often, Navigators are guides, accompanying people across the hospital site, providing clear information about the hospital and the services available to patients. They also help to resolve customer service issues and sign-post people to other services, such as Patient Advice and Liaison Service. They also ask people about their experience at Kingston Hospital and capture feedback through the Friends & Family Test.
This role requires volunteers who are physically fit, and able to be standing or walking for most of the shift. The volunteers should thrive in a busy environment, enjoy meeting and interacting with all types of people, so good communication skills are essential. The role involves volunteering in an often very busy environment and you need to be aware of the principles of confidentiality in a hospital environment.
Navigators are needed in Main Outpatients Department from Monday to Friday. Our priority times are from 9am until 12 noon, and from 1pm until 4pm.

Encouraging patients to use self check-in kiosks and answer any questions about where their appointments are located and the ‘patient calling’ system.
Explaining the support and services available to patients, eg Boots, RVS café, toilets
Collecting patient feedback using the Friends & Family Test.
Listening to visitors concerns, and where appropriate, directing them to a member of staff or support service that can help.
Signposting patients and visitors to PALS or Complaints as appropriate.

All volunteers need to be supported in their role. This can range from saying a regular ‘thank you’ for the time and talents that people give to Kingston Hospital through their volunteering; to more substantial coaching to make the most of their time and develop personally through the time they give. Peer Support Volunteers are mentors to new and returning volunteers, guiding them through the experience of receiving and starting on their placements, developing new skills and responsibilities within their roles and achieving their personal and professional goals from volunteering.
What will I be doing?
As a Peer Support Volunteer, you will be assigned a group of around 40-50 volunteers to nurture and develop. This will involve:
Acting as a Buddy[1] to support their first orientation to their role and placement
Calling volunteers after their first Buddy session to find out how it went and any additional support the volunteer may need
Calling volunteers 3 months after they are allocated their placement to:
Find out how they are getting on
Offer support or insight to support their development in their roles
Answer FAQs and think through challenges together
Give and receive feedback about their volunteering
Conducting general welfare calls to volunteers to listen to their experiences and receive feedback on volunteering, services and care that the hospital provides
Doing ward visits to be a presence for volunteers ‘in site’, offering support, thanks and receiving feedback in the moment
Doing monthly ward and departmental visits to collect ‘Sign In’ books to enable the Volunteering Team to trace and manage attendance of volunteers.
Communicating any potential feedback from the clinical staff / volunteers to the Volunteering Service Manager on a timely basis.
Peer Support Volunteers may be asked to do some occasional light administrative support tasks for the Volunteering Team, for example, putting Christmas Cards into envelopes.
Peer Support Volunteers will have limited access to Better Impact, a system that will enable them to identify the volunteers they support and contact them directly. Full training, including data protection and confidentiality guidance will be provided.
What we are looking for:
A successful Peer Support Volunteer is someone who:
Has a caring nature and wants to nurture the best in people
Is un-phased by challenges that people may be experiencing and prepared to work together to find solutions
Has experience of nurturing or developing others, for example, teaching, tutoring, coaching, training, counselling, managing or other ways to support people
Is willing to learn mentorship skills specific to volunteers at Kingston Hospital
Is a confident communicator, both in writing, on the telephone, over the web and in person.
Can give a minimum commitment of 3 hours per week, for a minimum period of 1 year (please note the minimum commitment is more for this role due to the confidential nature of information you will be party to)
Is IT literate, perhaps with experience of using a database (we use Better Impact but any CRM database would be helpful)
