We offer an outpatient hysteroscopy service for women with irregular or heavy periods. We also see patients who require investigation of the cavity of the womb or its lining.

We currently see patients referred from without our department. We are looking to expand the service to enable GP's to refer directly to our clinic.

You would have been referred because you are suffering from one or a combination of the following:

  • Abnormal bleeding from the womb
  • If you had a scan that revealed suspected polyps or fibroids
  • If you have a fertility/ recurrent miscarriage problem
  • Doctors sometimes need to assess the suitability of a patient for a certain surgical procedure through hysteroscopy like endometrial ablation or prior to deciding how to treat fibroids
  • In order to obtain a biopsy (small sample)
  • In order to remove or fit a coil
  • We are currently looking at incorporating other services soon, including Hysteroscopic Sterilisation

What should you expect?

We aim to see patients as soon as feasible (usually within six weeks of referral).

When you attend for your procedure, you will be met by one of our consultants and another member of our dedicated gynaecology nursing staff.

The procedure itself only takes a few minutes and is usually well tolerated. Some women experience some discomfort or period-like cramps. Patients are therefore advised to take simple pain killers (Paracetamol or Ibuprofen) just before the procedure.

Would you like to leave feedback about this department?

Referral is done by the consultant who sees you in the Gynaecology Clinic
