What we do in Ambulatory Emergency Care (AEC)
“Ambulatory Care is clinical care which may include diagnosis, observation, treatment and rehabilitation, not provided within the traditional hospital bed base or within the traditional out-patient services that can be provided across the primary/ secondary care interface.”The Royal College of Physicians, Acute Medicine Task Force and endorsed by The Royal College of Emergency Medicine 2012.
Our vision for Ambulatory Emergency Care service is to create a caring environment in which to provide excellent ambulatory patient care for our local population. We offer assessments, diagnostic and rehabilitation services, as well as treating patients who come to us with a wide variety of conditions.
Our referral criteria has been developed according to the four key questions as provided by the Directory of Ambulatory Emergency Care for Adults (2014) to determine patient suitability for the AEC.
Direct referral to the Acute Care Physician
Access to a consultant acute care physician (ACP) enables GPs to discuss and refer a medical patient for assessment, diagnosis and treatment, potentially bypassing the Emergency Department. The ACP will advise the GP on the phone or will direct the patient with a referral letter, to either the AEC or Emergency Department (ED). The AEC is based on the 3rd floor of the Kingston Surgical Centre.
Opening Hours and referrals
AEC is open Monday - Friday, 9am to 10pm, with the last referral/arrival time accepted at 5pm. This is to allow time for assessment and treatment to be undertaken before the unit closes.
The Units accepts direct referrals from GPs and the Emergency Department when patients are identified as being suitable for treatment in the AEC.
