Coronavirus: Information for patients and visitors

Visitor restrictions on hospital wards 

No visiting is allowed on our adult inpatient wards. We know that this difficult for patients and families, but this step has been taken to ensure that we limit the spread of COVID 19 as much as possible.  Exceptions to this are: 

Patients receiving end of life care – in the difficult and upsetting circumstances where patients may be at the end of their life, the nurse in charge can enable one family member to spend time with their loved one. Please contact the ward about this. 

Children under 16 on our inpatient wards – one visitor allowed at a time. No siblings are allowed to visit.  

Maternity – one birth partner for labour and delivery only, swapping is not permitted. No siblings are allowed to visit.  Find more information about changes to our maternity services here.  

Advocates/visitors who are required to make decisions on behalf of patients who do not have the capacity to make decisions for themselves. This includes people with dementia,  a learning disability or autism. 

Changes to our outpatient services

To reduce the number of visits to the hospital by members of the public, we are changing how we provide outpatient care.

We are only asking people to come to the hospital if it is essential for you to see a health professional because of your current health condition, or you need urgent investigations or treatment for a new problem.

We would like to reassure patients that Kingston Hospital remains committed to seeing all urgent cases, whilst assessing the most appropriate level of care and minimising risk to patients and staff.

Changes to Kingston Hospital’s Royal Eye Unit Eye Casualty walk-in service

We will no longer be offering a walk-in eye casualty service at the Royal Eye Unit. Patients who are self-referring or have been advised to visit the eye casualty by another healthcare professional will no longer be seen on a walk-in basis.

Patients with urgent enquiries are asked to contact us via our dedicated phone line (020 8934 6799), so that we can book an appropriate appointment for you.

Paediatrics – Emergency Department

The Emergency Department at Kingston Hospital is still seeing children. Please attend as usual if you are worried that your child requires urgent medical assistance. Once your child has been  triaged in the Emergency Department you may be redirected to another part of the Hospital for further assessment and treatment. This is due to the current Coronavirus pandemic. Please be assured that your child will receive the same care from the same specialist nursing and medical teams at Kingston Hospital, but this may well be in a different part of the Hospital than is usually the case.

Important information about the coronavirus (COVID-19)

The NHS and Public Health England (PHE) are well prepared for outbreaks of new infectious diseases. The NHS has put in place measures to protect patients, our community and NHS staff while ensuring as many services as possible are available to the public.

If you have symptoms associated with coronavirus including a new continuous cough and a high temperature, you are advised to stay at home for 7 days.

Please do not book a GP appointment or attend your GP practice.

If you live with other people, they should stay at home for at least 14 days, to avoid spreading the infection outside the home. After 14 days, anyone you live with who does not have symptoms can return to their normal routine.

But, if anyone in your home gets symptoms, they should stay at home for 7 days from the day their symptoms start. Even if it means they’re at home for longer than 14 days. The most up-to-date public guidance is always online at

If your symptoms are serious, or get worse, NHS 111 has an online coronavirus service that can tell you if you need further medical help and advise you what to do. 

Only call 111 direct if you are advised to do so by the online service or you cannot go online.
