Dr Bernadette Ratnayake is Consultant Anaesthetist with special interest in Perioperative Care, Pain Management and Orthopaedic Anaesthesia. Her qualifications are MBBS, DA, FRCA, FFPMRCA and recently obtained a level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management. She is a visiting consultant at the Southwest London Elective Orthopaedic Centre, Epsom.
She leads the Inpatient Pain Management service which provides safe and effective pain management techniques for all inpatients and is passionate about pain education.
She established the Department of Peri-Operative Medicine in 2004, a service that is fundamental for preparing patients for surgery and improving surgical outcomes.
Her educational roles include supervising doctors in training, appraising and mentoring consultants.
Her national roles include board membership of the National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia (NIAA) Research Council, UK and membership of the guidelines group of the Centre for Peri-Operative Care (CPOC) at the Royal College of Anaesthetists.
She was the President of the British Society of Orthopaedic Anaesthetists (BSOA) 2015- 2020, which promotes education in orthopaedic and trauma anaesthesia.
She regularly lectures at national and international meetings on Pain Management, Trauma & Orthopaedic Anaesthesia, care of the older surgical patient and peri-operative medicine.
