Professional background

Dr O’Mahony is one of two Stroke Consultants at Kingston Hospital and is currently the nominated Clinical Lead for Stroke.

Dr O’Mahony graduated from the University of Dublin, Trinity College in 1987 where he was a Foundation Scholar.  He completed his postgraduate training in Dublin and Newcastle upon Tyne.  His MD research thesis was a study of the Prevalence of Stroke and associated disability.

Dr O’Mahony has previously worked as Consultant Physician at Newcastle General & The Royal Victoria Hospitals, Newcastle upon Tyne, and at Croydon University Hospital; and St Helier Hospital.  He has also worked as Senior Lecturer in Geriatric Medicine/Staff Specialist at the University of Sydney & Westmead Hospital, Sydney.  He has been a Consultant Stroke Physician at Kingston Hospital since 2017.

At Kingston, he is one of two Stroke Consultants involved in the running of the Transient Ischaemic Attack(TIA) and Stroke clinics along with the 20 bedded Acute Stroke Unit on Keats ward.  He also has an honorary contract at St George’s Hospital to participate in the Hyperacute Stroke Unit (HASU) consultant on call rota, where there are 24/7 thrombolysis and thrombectomy services.

He has published and presented at national and international scientific meetings on a range of topics relevant to Stroke and Elderly Care medicine and contributes to the Stroke Research portfolio run at Kingston Hospital.
